I need info on someone in NI who can recover data on a XD card and
possibly apply software to get the best out of photos

If you have a card reader then you should be able to use the following software to easily recovers the photos, I've used the previous version and was able to recover all the photos of a formated card

Another vote for PCInspector.

I lost ~200 pics from a trip to Berlin, and was panicking. Managed to recover all but 3 of them using this software.
I didn't have a card reader either. Jus plugged the card back in camera, and plugged it into PC using USB cable.

I use www.recuva.com. As for photo manipulation, nothing to stop you trying yourself with picasa.google.com for simple functions (and it's also great for organizing your photos) and www.gimp.org for anything more copmlex, can pretty much do most of what Photoshop can do. All the programs in the links are free.
