Ipod problem - Please help?

Options
Hi

I have an Ipod which is about 2 1/2 years old, its a black video one - not that I have ever downloaded videos on it and I cannot remember what GB it is - sorry shows how techie I am.

Anyhow I have noticed the battery is not holding its charge. The meter on it shows about 1/2 battery life but then it cuts out. As I really don't use it that often I cannot say how long it last totally from being charged to running out but It cannot be long.

Any advice? I don't really want to go and buy a new one - cannot afford it to be honest and I don't let the new nano's etc - I like the one I have.

Someone suggested doing a total reset, wiping it clean and starting again but Im not sure. Any ideas how much to get fixed, can it be fixed?

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you
Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!

Buy a new battery from Maplins ;)

They're more powerful now too so should last longer too

Don't worry - it's easy to replace the battery.

Depending on how heavily you've used it over the past 2 1/2 years, the battery could just be reaching the end of it's life. Unfortunately, you can't easily replace the battery yourself, it has to be done at an Apple service centre (and costs quite a bit I think)

Eh? I replaced the memory and the battery in mine!

Battery was about £20 including tools from Maplin.

Well, OK, it's not especially difficult, and you shouldn't have a problem if you're technically minded. But the battery isn't replaceable in the same way that say a mobile phone battery is - to replace the ipod battery you need top open up the case (which isn't the easiest job in itself) and detach the old battery.

If you don't fancy doing this, then Apple charges £70 for it

I wouldn't dream of paying Apple £70 to do it!!

    Thank you for that.

Took it into a place in our local town and they are going to do it for £40, but they are going to check that it is the battery first thats the problem and not something else, charge if thats the case is £10 - which is fair enough.

cannot go on holiday without my music!!!

For future reference, this is what Apple have to say about iPod batteries:

    £49, surely?
If you take it to an Apple store, or any other approved Apple place.

There's varying degrees of difficulty in replacing iPod batteries. I looked into replacing the battery in mine (just out of curiosity - it's fine and still under warranty).
To anyone who said opening them was easy - this guide to replacing the battery in the current generation model would disagree with you..
"It may be necessary to do this multiple times in order to achieve optimal straightness on the sides."
    - I don't think "optimal straightness" is a legit term. It's either straight or it isn't.

Then you look at the pricing. $20 for the battery (only guaranteed for 6 months), $15 for the tools, and you too can destroy your iPod in under an hour.

I think I'd still rather pay double than risk breaking it.
