Buying a new bed

I need to buy a new bed but cannot decide which one to get. I suffer from chronic bad ache, shall I get a memory foam mattress or an orthopaedic one? I would be grateful for some advice. Thanks

The 'orthapedic' description on a bed really means verrrrrrry little, as it's not got a proper definition of what it should actually be made of, or how it ought to perform.

Friend of ours has back problems & paid £900 for a memory foam matress & likes it - after a bit of getting used to.

We've just ordered a Layzee Darwin divan from Homebase They have them on offer - 1/2price & standard, cushion top, or memoryfoam types. Kingsize memoryfoam is £310 ish.

But it'd be worth seeing your back doctor if they can suggest the right sort.

    hi there
i have a memory mattress topper, which is about few inches thick and lays on top of your mattress.
i find it fab. they are cheaper than a whole mattress made of the memory foam and if you went for a hard matress which would give you the support then the topper would provide the comfort and extra support. my mate has a whole memory mattress and to be honest i find it a little too soft.
it maybe worthwhile finding a bed place and trying a few especially if they have the memory matress.

    good luck :)

vansboy is right in what he says about the title 'Orthopaedic'. All it means is that is is supposed to give your back support, so this could include:
    • Firm open coil sprung mattresses
    • Any pocket sprung mattress
    • Any memory foam mattress
By far the best type of mattress for back support is pocket sprung with memory foam, but try to get a two sided one so that it can be turned and prolong the life of the mattress.
  • I have been having a look for a king size double sided pocket sprung with memory foam divan set but I cant find one. Can anyone provide a link to one so I know what to look for and where to find one. Thanks

    Hi Browntoa.

You probably found one of the better advice pages for all the big stores, and most of it is very good advice. However you should still remember that they are still trying to sell you a bed, and there are many gimmicks in the bed trade. Obviously they aren't going to tell you about the gimmicks if you are going to buy off them. So just remember that the advice is aimed towards selling you a bed.

You need to do a search on the forums for silentnight, and read what is said about them.
