VAT on Travel Systems

Whilst visiting a nursery shop at the weekend looking at Prams we were advised that if we bought a Travel System with matching pram, car seat etc then VAT would be chargable at 5% but if we bought a seperate pram and non matching car seat it would be chargable at the usual 17.5%. Can anyone tell us whether this is true or not? and also, why this would be?
Thanks
Thanks

Ask them! I bet you'll find it's just a marketing thing they've made up. As far as I can see, reduced rates of VAT don't apply to stuff like this.
Was it a wholesale outlet? Because normally you wouldn't see the vat element of the purchase on the bill would you?
Forget the vat and look at the total price and see if it's what you want to pay.
have fun choosing.0 -

Thanks for your reply. I would normaly have thought it was a marketing ploy but this was a small mother/daughter outfit out in the sticks. Not usually the type to go hard sell!
It wasn't that we were tempted as we've already decided a travel system isn't for us, but it just seemed wierd!0 -
John Lewis do this too.0

We've now discovered that it's car seats that only have 5% VAT so any pram which is bought in conjunction with a matching car seat (i.e. travel system) gets charged at the lower rate.0
