Lloyds visa debit card issues

Like many others my Lloyds cashpoint account was turned into a visa debit account earlier this year, a letter forewarned me of the changes so I went in and told them I didn't want a visa debit account but they said I didn't have to use it as a visa card and could continue to use it as a cashpoint card.

Well, no.

The day came when the cashpoint card got swallowed by the Tescos cashpoint so I put in my new visa debit card and was greeted with a message saying it couldn't go through with the transaction. I tried the new card in a few other cashpoints where my old card worked fine but all of them refused to play ball.

So I went in to my local branch and told them this and they said I could only use it as a cashpoint card in their own cashpoints, I said I used my old card in non-Lloyds cashpoints and they said that wasn't possible - funny, I have many statements showing cash withdraws from Sainsburys, Tescos etc. cashpoints...
I asked if they could give me an account that would allow me to use any cashpoint but they said they couldn't.

My Barclays visa debit card suits me fine and I only got the Lloyds cashpoint card for my disability living allowance payments and I didn't want all my eggs in one basket so to speak.

What can I do? they've effectively crippled my account, I could use it as a normal visa card and pay for groceries/things online etc. with it but to keep a 'realtime' track of the balance I'd have to go into town and use a Lloyds cashpoint because it doesn't work in other banks cashpoints, my Barclays debit card does so why can't Lloyds?

Are there any other banks (not including Barclays) which offer a cashpoint card account where I can withdraw the cash from any cashpoint? so I can make my life easier and tell Lloyds to go jump.

  • Not sure what you are asking really. Do you just want a Link cash card for withdrawing money from any bank but without a debit card?

If so, the Norwich and Peterborough Building society offer an account with a cheque book and a Link card. https://www.npbs.co.uk

  • I have a visa debit account with lloyds and it works fine in other cashpoints, good job as lloyds don't have a cashpoint where I live!

I presume you have one of Lloyds' basic Cash Accounts? In that case, their Visa Debit can't be used in other banks' cash machines. I have no idea of the reasoning for this, but the good news is that this restriction will hopefully be lifted soon, so... fingers crossed! :)

Although the new card will not work in Tesco's ATM machines they will be good enough to get you cashback at the tills.
Rememeber to unlock the PIN at a cashpoint first though.

It is correct as stated above, that the new Lloyds debit card issued on the basic/cash account will only allow you to draw cash from Lloyds ATMs and the Post Office. However that was also supposed to be the case with the old cashpoint only card too. I wonder if the ATM card previously issued to you had been set up incorrectly (in that it gave you more services that you should have had)? Have you tried asking the bank to upgrade your account, if you have been there a while?

What I would suggest is for OP to open a savings account that allows you to have a cashpoint card.
If it works in other machines then all he/she would need to do is to divert benefits into savings account or transfer from current via telephone/internet banking before going to make the withdrawals.

I honestly do not know if this card would work but would be interested to hear if it does or not.

    Hi shelfstacker

it is because the bank who owns the ATM charges a fee to the other banks for accepting a card each time it is used. It normally balances out, i.e. Barclays pay x pence everytime one of their customers use a LTSB ATM and vice versa, but maybe it can end up costing one bank more than another. The Post Office transactions also go through LINK who collects the charge and I am assuming they are either compelled by the Government to allow Post Office withdrawals or they have negotiated a cheaper deal, or both.

They like cash back because it goes through the merchant service and hence they always make money out of it.
  • I've been with Lloyds for several years now as I'm on my 3rd issued card (as in the others expired & replacements sent), I asked if I could have an account that would give me the ability to withdraw cash from any cashpoint but they said no.

It cheeses me off because with the cashpoint card they originally gave me (& the 2nd one after 1st expired) I could withdraw cash from any cashpoint, but now my new card is a PITA to use, so whenever I get a payment in I take everything out in one go.

I don't have internet banking with the Lloyds card so to find out my balance I either have to make a physical or mental note of it or go to a cashpoint a mile away from where I usually shop.

I sincerely hope they lift the Lloyds-only cashpoint use of these cards, otherwise I'll be taking my money elsewhere.

Then register for internet banking. It is free and is secure (if you don't respond to any phising emails etc).
Then please try out my experiment.
Next time you are in the bank just ask to open an Easy Saver account. Don't mention anything about debit cards and where you can use them or not, just ask for a cashpoint card on the account.

It might work, it might not. Let us know how you get on.
