Gainsborough Showers?

I need a new electric shower and have seen that B&Q are discounting a gainsborough shower from £149 to £99. Its a silver one and about 10.8kw i think, just wondering if they are any good as offer finishes tomorrow or am i better off spending more for a known name shower.

They are better showers than they used to be,be carefull of getting a 10.8kw shower as your cable might not be large enough.

    Good advice, plumb1.

We had a replacement shower fitted and couldn't have the wattage we wanted without replacing cabling - so just kept the same wattage in the end.

In my opinion they're better than Tritons. Tritons don't seem to last very long. Gainsborough are much better quality if you ask me.

A couple of things to be wary of:

    1. As other members have already specified, 10.8Kw is a high rating for an electric shower. If you are replacing an older shower which is of a lower rating, you may need to upgrade your cable from 6mm squared to 10mm squared to cope with the additional current required. You may also need to replace the shower MCB switch in your consumer unit with one of a higher rating. If in doubt then get this done by an electrician.

    2. If you are replacing something like a Triton, you may find that the entry point for your water pipe into the shower is in a slightly different place on a Gainsborough. This is not usually the case, but bear this in mind as you may have to either alter the pipework slightly or hang the shower in a slightly different position. I replaced my Triton with a Gainsborough and the shower had to be hung in a different position on the wall. Not a big problem, but I ended up with a visible hole in the wall (previously covered by the Triton), which I then which I had to retile.

Of course if you don't already have a shower and are fitting one for the first time then you don't really need to worry about any of this!
  • Just a quick question - we are guting our bathroom and starting again. I want a new shower (not electric - runs off the combi and the mains) and wondered if anyone could recommend good makes. I am currently looking at Hudson Reed, Redring and Hansgrohe, altough this is onyl really becasue they make a deisgn which I like. I think we want thermostatis control to avoid the "Stop playing with taps!" screams from upstairs!

Any help appreciated - god i am getting my worth out of this area of the site of late!

    Cheers

Yes, we've always had Miras and they've been very good. The one we've got now cost about the same mentioned for the Gainsborough. We got it from PTS.

Not impressed with Gainsborough...we have a 10.8kw Gainsborough shower. Replaced a triton 8.5kw, and I expected to be blown away by the difference...think the triton was more powerful. Also, it's supposed to have a safety thermostatic cut off to prevent scalding, but it doesn't work at all- can tell instantly a cold tap is turned on, and flushing the loo....don't even go there!

I recommened Mira our has worked without any problems for about 12 years.

Unfortunately its got to the stage that the boiler/ gas fire (downstairs) and bathroom suit all need replacing :( argh it all comes at once.
