It sounds like an Aural Haematoma, a big blood clot forming between the skin and cartilage of the ear. It is not serious in terms of it wont be fatal but it is quite painful for your dog. What is usually done is the blood clot is removed by making an incision down his ear flap and then the ear is stitched accross to remove the pocket. Depending on where in the country you are, probably cost £200 ish

Well my dog went the vets today. And she had a seringe full of blood taken out. And if it comes back again, she will have that done again. And if it does come back again , she will need an operation. She is on steriods for 2 weeks so fingers crossed :D

The 2 drains then operate technique is a common approach. The real bad ones will go straight to surgery which has an excellent success rate. Your dog may end up with a bit of a cauliflower ear if the cartilage has been damaged but there is not a lot that can be done about that other than to get them drained early. Hope it all goes well for you.

I remember my dog having this procedure many years ago. He had a number of buttons sown to his ear to keep it flat post-op. Is this still carried out today?

You can use buttons, plastic tubing or I just use thicker than usual suture material. There are many suitable ways but all aim for scar tissue to prevent the ear filling up again.

Dont worry...its very common for it to return. My staffyxlab has allergies and last flair up had to have a drain put in his ear (which is a small plastic tube).. He hasnt needed one since..it was caused by scratcing and shaking his head. Poor boys a bit deaf now due to severe allergy/ear problems but its made him a bit calmer.. bless!
