Now I'm really ****ed off...got a letter today (22nd July) dated 17th July telling me that my bank account is indeed changing as of 19th July (3 days ago). Checked my online banking and it is now just a standard bank account and I've had a debit interest charge go out on the overdraft!

  • Hi. These posts have been really helpful as I have had and am still having these problems with HSBC. A friend and I have started a facebook group as it only took 500 people in a group last time for HSBC to actually take some notice and change their mind about not giving students any kind of free graduate overdraft at all.

Please join the group and forward to your friends so hopefully we can do something about this for a change.

Unfortunately I am unable to post links here so copy and paste this in the groups part to find it!

Is it wise to change accounts then?

This may be a silly question but how long do people expect a graduate account to last? Especially with an interest free overdraft? I thought graduate overdrafts were simply to help tide you over until you got a proper job, started earning money and joined the real world?

The HSBC Graduate account is supposed to last for 3 years after you graduate, with the interest free portion being reduced each time. That was the product sold to those who originally took out the Student Account, so those are the terms that account should stick to.

It's not a case of graduates trying to put off 'getting a real job and joining the real world', it's a dispute about getting the product they signed for.

Just to add that other banks do operate a 3 year graduate account with decreasing overdraft limits - so it's not like it's expecting too much from HSBC....
