I have a DSLR with several lenses and a compact camera. Of course the DSLR has the capability to deliver good shots in wide range of conditions. But I take 10x as many pictures on my compact because I carry it around all the time.

If you can only buy one camera get a compact when and if budget allows get a DSLR.

Canon make a good range of small camera which consistently get good reviews and wont break the bank.

Agree totally - being able to carry the compact at all times has enabled me to take photos and videos that I would never have taken with a DSLR - simply because of the ease of carrying it around - and also agree it is where to start (and learn), and move on from to a DSLR if the photography bug really takes hold.
