Thanks for the advice. I love the complete convience of using it when I am out and about as I can leave it in my bag for days and when needed feed my child easily with one hand and when on the go.

I used Ella's kitchen food my my ds. I would keep a couple of sachets in my bag for emergencies but if I was going somewhere where I knew there would be facilities or sitting down to eat lunch, then I would take something along with me that I'd made myself. It kept costs down.

You can buy little Tupperware pots that you put your own steamed veg in and other snacks.

Stewed apple and Custard is nice for them too.

These are just as convenient, although wouldn't have the shelf life of a tinned food.

It always amazes me how Carrot tinned baby food stains the clothes, whereas home cooked Carrot doesn't.

And makes them go a shade of orange not different to some fake tan cream.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Ended up taking our ds2 to specialist as we didn't know why he was a shade orange all the time, seems it just wasn't us that had this problem but he had seen quite a few babies with a slight orange tinge.
P.s It was the hipp orange and carrot that caused us the problems.

    YES!!

I used to use the Hipp Organic.. can't comment on other baby foods as we never used them, but I did use them as I was working full time and was too knackered to cook. Not very MSE of me. :o

    How odd!

  • my homecooked carrot did - was i doing something wrong? :o

butternut squash is worse though, it stains your hands, their face, their clothes, etc. and worst of all it stains their bottom when it comes out the other end

um, sorry OP i haven't seen it any cheaper than that. i agree about the convenience of that sort of thing when you're out.

Put an hour by and boil up a load of veg then whack it in the blender, spoon it into ice cube trays, when frozen.. pop out of trays into freezer bag and hey presto.... one bag of cubed food ready to be popped into tupperware pot and heated in microwave whenever you need it.

It's cheap, healthy and convenient!! I've never bothered with tins or jars, they are so expensive and have had so much heat treatment they contain next to no goodness.

DIY babyfood is not as much hassle as people think!

  • it's that 'heat in a microwave' but that matters though, in some circumstances. OP isn't saying she wants her baby to have jars for every meal, just for those times when it's convenient.

i used to take a jar out with me if we were going to be out of the house for 8 hours or more. a flask of hot water was okay for warming the first meal and bottle but for the later meals i'd rather have a jar than risk something home made having gone off during the day.

you can't always warm food in the middle of a field, or keep it cold enough throughout the day prior to warming :D
