Has anyone ever grown chickpeas?

I don't know whether this has come up here before - I couldn't find it by doing a search. With all the bad news about soaring food prices, OH and I have increased the potato patch and are trying to grow more sensible, nutritiuos crops this year.
By way of experiment, we planted a row of chickpeas (from the supermarket, labeled 'produced in France', which is where we are, albeit in the northern part). To our surprise, the plants are coming up really well!
Does anyone know what will happen next? Will they eventually produce chickpeas or is this totally unattainable in our climate? We have a vast library with gardening books, but growing chickpeas is not mentioned in any of them.
Information very much appreciated!

    Absolutely no blimmin idea whatsoever.

I'm doing the same with pinto beans though; as we eat tons of them so it makes complete sense to me to try growing them.

Another one of my little experiments. Have you tried googling it?

I doesn't - if none of the grapes can grow them then they are pretty hard to grow! looks like the issue is about peas forming behind the flowers; so perhaps a pollenation issue?

But, if you do have any luck I'm sure they would like to hear about it!
