    Bummer!

Well done for doing the right thing, shame they didn't give you a reward tho!

  • The dopey ungrateful clerk was probably one of the people filling up the machine, no care or pride in their job. Good manners cost nothing and a thank you for what you did certainly wouldn't have gone a miss. Being ungrateful and not seeming to care is a shame.

Customer service is full of people who don't want to give the public a customer service. You know that you did the right thing even though your tratment was shabby to say the least. You should write to the Mananging Director with your story, including the (non) customer service part. Hope you get a cash reward.

I had a sort of similar experience at a Nat West cashpoint last year. It is in a busy market town and the person in front of me was on a mobile phone and sort of rushed off in a hurry. I walked to the machine and only then noticed that his money was still there as was his receipt, but I couldn't see the guy in the crowd.

Took the whole lot into the bank holding it aloft as I stupidly felt guilty at even taking it, tried to get some attention and was told to join the queue for customer services. Waited almost 20 minutes and was barely acknowledged when I finally managed to hand the money over. They were so disinterested, they just dumped the money and till receipt on the desk said a curt thank you and called the next person forward.

I really hope that poor guy got his £160 back.

Looking back on it I know I should have asked for a receipt, or even maybe taken details from the till receipt to make sure the guy had the money returned, but I was so nonplussed at the way I was handled and was back out on the street before I even realised that I had no proof or anything that the money had been handed in. A friend later panicked me even more as she said there was probably CCTV near the machine and if they guy didn't get his money they might think I stole it.

Not only would the CCTV show you didn't steal the money as you picked it up then headed for the doors of the bank but the CCTV in the bank would have also shown your nonplussed face :D

probably get put on a fraud watch list, due to the repeated withdrawls (getting the right amounts, or not!) !

i would have kept the extra money safe, until they ask for it back.

Oh cheers ;) Not only have wasted my time phoning, waiting and travelling back to branch but i will be put on a fraud list. Just my luck.

Then again it is my fault for making multiple withdrawls. As i had no intention of keeping it and wanted to make sure there was a definite problem before having main atm in town turned off on a friday night i suppose i did get a bit carried away. Just expected a little bit more thanks.
Just realised that she didn't even give me a receipt for returning money so i have no proof i actually returned any.

Well done for doing the right thing OP... Natwest are idiots anyway, even before I read this, but now even more so... you saved them a lot of time and hassle and got nothing for your trouble!!
  • The longer the queues are, the more generous the ATM is!

Joke aside; Four ago ago I was actually short changed by an ATM in Stansted. I took out £300 but only received £280. Man, did that p*ss me off.
I emailed my bank complaining and contacted them in person after returning from my trip but to no avail. The f rigging bank wouldn't budge. After that episode I only use ATM's on rare occations. Here's the funny thing: a couple of years ago, I withdrew a large amount from my account but the teller only had £20 notes. In one of the bundles there were 101 notes giving me £20 too much.I didn't tell the bank. ROUGH JUSTICE!

Thanks to all who posted comments.

Got a call from Manager at RBS yesterday thanking me for my honesty and to tell me a gift had been sent in appreciation.

Today, i got a delivery. Huge big box. Though it might be a DAB radio or something. Opened to find two smaller boxes.

One contained a bottle of Glenmorangie and in the other were two Edinburgh Crystal Tay whisky glasses. Done a quick price check and a pair of the glasses vary from £40.00 to £60.00 and the bottle at about £25.00. :D

So considering had a kept the money i would probably have had to pay it back then its not a bad reward. Would rather have had some money but it could have been a RBS keyring, ballon and pen set.

Only one problem!! I DONT DRINK. Will probably give it to my social club for a raffle prize at it's next charity night. Can't be bothered ebaying glasses.
