I use them a lot - in fact i have 3 in the freezer right now.
Morrisons sell them but don`t always have them so if i see one i`ll scoop it up and freeze.
I do them in the slow coker and scrape all the fat off, it`s amazing how much meat you can get off one.
I can remember when they were 50p so they cost around 3 times that now.

I'm putting mine (£1,73 from morrisons) in the Remoska as we speak... with a splash of white wine, garlic cloves and some sage leaves. Will let you know...

Sorry to bump this but does anyone else have any ideas for use of these. I bought one yesterday to try a recipe in the latest Prima. They suggested boiling for 10 mins before draining, rinsing and cleaning the pan. Return to boil in clean water then simmer for 1.5 / 2 hours. i got quite a lot of meat off and the dog had a bone (not that there was much left on it).

All ready to make a hash type meal with beetroot and apple salad tonight. Prima has a great old style edition out at the moment.

I've got a good butcher. All his chickens are free range and he has a blackboard up with the names of the farmers he's got that weeks meat from, yet when I asked for a ham shank he looked at me like I was daft and said he didn't have any.

I use them for sandwiches and soup - I boil up a couple shanks (I don't soak overnight because i'm not organised enough - I just bring to the boil, leave for a few minutes, then change to cold water and onions celery etc. and start again) strip the meat off and freeze in sandwich portions and freezer the stock as a soup base. I can't get neat slices from them though, but pieces great for egg and bacon style pie, omelettes, pasta, potato bakes etc.

Please note, it's not a good idea to give a dog a cooked bone, they splinter differently to raw bones and can produce nasty sharp shards, which could mean at best expensive vet treatment and at worst RIP dog :(
