Pork Shank

Options
Taking someones advice on here I picked up a pork (ham) shank for £1.43 in Morrisons for OH's sarnies next week (amongst other things probably - depends how much I get off it) - much cheaper than sliced ham etc!

But whats the best way to cook it? It only says to roast on the label. Can I put it in the SC? If so for how long and do I need to add water?

Thanks

  • I put mine in the slow cooker with veggies and water, don't know how long for, then remove the ham and add my split peas or broth mix to the stock.

hi, i bought one the other day and oh dear its still in fridge, does have a good date on it and ive only got 5wks til baby number 4 comes along so i have a good excuse at mo for not cooking. butcher told me to soak over night in water as can be very salty , next day rinse and boil for abour 3 hours, so i would probably try mine this way, i should of thought it would be fine in sc but as i dont have one i cant really advise sorry, x

This used to be a ritual for me every Christmas. My Nan would give me one as part of a Christmas box. I would take it home and soak it overnight as your butcher said then boil it up with onions. It would last us a couple of weeks for sarnies and then I would use the stock to make soup too.

It's been a few years since we had one though. I remember my cats also loved it ;)

You could stick it in the freezer until you're feeling more up to cooking it.

Right I've had a ham hock before, the ones that are like gammon and roasted that I've stripped the meat off and used it in fried rices etc..., but I've also seen Pork shanks the ones that are, I suppose, one up from a trotter :o and look more like 'pork' what do you do with them??
Funny innit I've paid big bucks in restaurants for Lamb Shanks (a scandal) but don't fancy the piggy equivalent....
do you get a lot of meat on a pork shank and do you ever get crackling if you roast it?

I often buy a ham shank from our butchers and hack it up cold and serve with salad.. I use the meat from ONE shank to feed hubby and myself and the 8 children.. who all eat as much as a normal person!!

My local Morrisons sell ham shanks on the bacon counter. I think they are about £1.50 each.
