mac powerbook g4 battery question

Hello,
A lovely person on freecycle has offered me a powerbook g4 15.2'' laptop.
It has been unused for over a year and the battery is dead so I will have to get a new one so I can try it.
I know nothing about these laptops so I was wondering if they can be used plugged in without a battery ?

Does anyone know where you can get cheap good batteries for these in the U.K? I have looked on ebay but am a bit dubious about getting one from hong kong.

Apple sell them as do many other third party apple dealers, just off the top of my head www.cancomuk.com and https://www.jigsaw24.com you may have to ring them to find out the details.

Getting a G4 laptop for free is a very good deal, the battery may well be £60-£100

It should work directly with the mains, but if it doesn't hold any charge at all, you may have a minor issue, as it'll loose date/time and other preference settings every time you unplug it.

A friend of mine had a G4 Powerbook with a dodgy battery, and it worked just fine plugged into the mains.

A free Powerbook is a nice deal; despite being old, they're still very capable machines for most tasks.

my g4 battery is knakered- i have been using it off the mains (battery removed) for several months less problems than trying to use it with a poor battery... i cant afford to replace it currently so this is the ideal solution.
