Does anyone use a hand lawn mower?

Recently we had a bit of an accident with our electric mower , luckily no damage done but it could of been oh so different... So OH decided to buy a hand lawn mower. I said "well it'll be you that does the mowing from now on then?"

But he duly trotted off to B & Q to buy a very cheap £30+ hand lawn mower and I very sceptically watched him mowing... Well I was very impressed to say the least, mainly it was sooooooo quiet (reminded me of my grandad trotting up and down) it cut the grass perfectly (striped too) and when I finally got a go , I found it was easy to push.. it has a hook on receptacle to catch all the grass cuttings...

So I am now a convert and the electric one has stayed in the shed for nearly a month.. its light easily carried and there is no dragging cables and plugs out to the front of the house... and as long as the grass is dry and not too long its great.. I don't worry about waking up the neighbours if I want to mow early or late in the day.. saves a bit of power and it is just so soothing walking up and down quietly mowing...

EDIT: I meant to add I do have a reasonably small garden but lawns back and front... so not too much to mow..

I guess I might have to use the electric one when the grass is long at the beginning of the season but otherwise its the hand mower for me.. its got to be more environmentally friendly and I guess good for my stomach muscles ...:rotfl:

When our electric one gives up the ghost I am getting a hand one. Why I thought I needed an electric one when the grass is only 3 m square I have no idea.

Yes we have a hand lawnmower and it is the one I like best! It is not our only mower, we have a large plot and several types of equipment - from a ride-on mower to an old-fashioned scythe. But like tanith I like it being so quiet, and I have always held a fear of powered mowers since my uncle sliced off 3 toes with a Flymo in 1977!

    Lawn-mowing is OH's department. Consequently he has a a sit-on lawnmower.

Our lawn is 150 foot by about 40, so the big machine is clearly not needed. However perhaps he thinks of it as a grass-cutting quad bike.

I have been using the same mower for nearly 16 years, a push mower and it cost me £30 from argos, if it ever gives up the ghost I will get another the same, I feel that I have more control when using it.
I used to cut my parents lawn when they were alive and I hated their electric beast but stangely enough I liked their electric scarifier.

It appears this year gardening is going more and more back to basics - Along with vegetable seed sales now exceeding flowers for the first time since World War II, it now looks like manual cylinder mowers are making a real comeback (and a lot healthier and cheaper than powered mowers).

I always liked the very gentle "tic, tic, tic" of an old-fashioned cylinder mower - very relaxing if you've had one of those days at work.

and another thing is that a handmower is much faster - well for our smallish lawn anyway. In the time it would take to get the extension flex out, unwind it, plug in, unplug, rewind the extension flex & put away I've pretty much finished hand mowing the lawn.
  • My daughter has one of these and swears by it. Unfortunately the blades are blunt and she can't find anywhere which sharpens them. Anyone help in Southampton area?
  • My dad loves his, he gardens for a living (for the council) and has all of the lawnmowers you could possibly have at work but when he comes home, he only uses his hand lawn mower. He hasn't even got a strimmer! I think he uses it as a bit of therapy to get away from my step mum lol!
