I've just upgraded to a 2mb service, but the icon(tv) at the bottom right still shows connection at 800Kbps.

Should this figure change automatically to reflect my new connection speed ?
and what sppeds should I expect to be getting ?

Here are my results :
Direction........Actual Speed.......................True Speed (estimated)
Downstream....1866 Kbps (233.3 KB/sec)......2015 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream........237 Kbps (29.6 KB/sec)...........255 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Hmmm, your downstream speeds look fine. With 0.5Mbps you'll get downloads speeds of around 60Kb/s, so 233Kb/s is pretty close to the 240Kb/s you should get.

And the upstream looks ok too. Most services offer a 256Kbps (0.25Mbps) upstream, so using the above example, that works out at 30Kb/s transfer speeds, which you virtually have.

By those stats I'd be very pleased. Not sure why the network connection is showing up differently though.

Your speed results are fine for a 2Mb connection. Not sure what the icon is telling you, but the speed test results are OK.

Your speed test results are typically 2mb/s, but the little tv icon is the speed between your modem and computer, (800kb/s).
What is the make & model of your modem?

well, the problem with some isps is that they sell UP TO 2 mbs service, depending on the contention ration (how many people you share your line with). If (like AOL is supposed to be) you have a contention ration of 50-1 or higher (AOL won't declare it), then you will get worse speeds than a contention ration of 20-1. Most ISPs are 50-1 but if they won't tell you then this should ring warning bells!

The other thing to consider is where you are downloading/streaming from as their uploading capabilities might be fluxuating depending on who else is accessing the site.

If you are using a speedtest website then obviously the first factor will affect it, if you are judging speed on what your pc tells you, the the second will affect it too.

    It is a copperjet 800usb.

Could this be why it only shows as a 800Kbps ? do I need a new modem ?

As for the connection speed, There seems to be no change to the speed at all. If anything the connection is a little slower. There are definitely more drop-outs(click and nothing happens).

My downloads using azureus are the same speeds that I was getting on the 512 service.

Shouldn't be any problem with your modem speed (upto 8000k download speed)

I would try a re-install of your modem using the setup cd from your ISP if you have one.

I would try downloading a single file from within your web browser to test your download speed, azurus can take 15mins to reach full speed which can vary depending on the number & speed of seeds.

You should have download speed of between 190 - 220kb/s

Not true. The reason for the "Up to 2Megs" is down to the condition of the cable from the exchange to your property,(noise on the line etc.) and/or the distance your property is from the exchange, (As the cable is routed , not as the crow flies).
The contention ratio only really comes in to play during peak times when others in your neighbourhood would need to be online and downloading at the same time as you.
So, contention ratio is only a problem speed wise at certain times if ever whilst the state of your line is a problem 24/7.

To robowen, as Rex says, nowt wrong with the connection or your modem because the speed test is measured from your PC to ADSLGuide server (If that's who you used) and back to your PC and vice versa. If your modem was slowing things down it would have shown up.

Your speed test results looked OK. With azureus, you need to look at the average over a few different files. Your download speed will depend A LOT on what other users are up to, and how many seeds. I can have a download as slow as 25/30KBps up to 240KBps (don't forget that your download speed can be affected a lot by your upload speed as well).
