every time you open an account with an overdraft they will perform a credit check and having loadso f these in a short period of time can look really bad, even affecting your credit

i think you might be able to, but i believe its standard practise to perform a credit check on every bank account opened, apart from the 'basic banking' accounts you get from places like HSBC which dont have cheque books, credit cards, etc. etc.

  • You probably can but you may only be able to get the freebies if you open the account with the overdraft.
Not much paperwork and they filled it all out for me at Natwest so well worth it for a freebie.
Just phone them up and ask if you can open it without the overdraft and still get the railcard, thinking about it my friend has a Natwest account and she only increases the overdraft when she needs more money so I think she didn't actually start with one but got the railcard anyway.
I think Karnam may be right and they do a credit check regardless though.

I had a Student Account with Barclays, HSBC, Natwest

Barclays gave me a free mobile phone, waterstone vouchers, and some other freebies with interest free overdraft, and a credit card with cashback.

Natwest gave me £60.00 or I could have chosen a rail card (i think), mugs, stationery etc without an overdraft but i didnt want one. which i never used but is now a graduate account.

HSBC gave me some vouchers and some money, also with interest free overdraft

Lloyds student account, which i closed with the money they gave me after a few months, (but funnily enough they never closed properly or withdraw money from my account so i closed it the second time and they gave me the cash again :T )

I now have my barclays (no longer graduate account), HSBC graduate account and abbey account graduate account) which i have interest free on both, maxed them all up on the overdraft but put in high savings account. but have regular money credit into otherwise i get a telephone call from them to say im not paying it off, but then i withdraw the money out in a few weeks again. :D

I opened the account in my local town and also during the freshers week when i was enrolling on my course. me and my mates all saw it as freebies. :rotfl:

I have a HSBC (£1750 od), Barclays (£2000 od) and Natwest (£2000 od) accounts. They're grad account nows. I even recently blagged a new Abbey grad account but I dont intend to use it.

These 0% overdrafts got me through another year of university to do a MSc. Just keep them all active and you can't go wrong. My bills are spread across all and I use a diff card each time I take money out the wall.

For new students you must get the 4 year railcard deal .... worth £80 (was with HSBC when I was at uni, now its Natwest I think).
