20% Discount From Atlantic

Options
Did you know you can get a 20% discount off your bills from Atlantic if 10% of your income is spent on energy with them? This only used to be available for people on benefits, but they've extended it now. Tell them what your take home pay is, you don't have to provide proof so no long winded process, they'll calculate if you spend 10% of that on energy and if you do, they'll apply the 20% discount.
They also have a Better Plan package - with no extra charges, but provide a gadget / monitor for your energy which you plug in and it tells you how much energy you are using and how much it costs. It has something which spins so you can see how fast / slow and you can look to see what you have left on and switch it off e.g. TV on standby. If you cut your energy usage by 20% as a result of using the gadget, your bills will obviously be reduced and they'll give you cash back to reward you for using less. Sounds to good to be true, but it is. It's all to do with energy conservation and going green.
They're also sending me a free booklet that tells me what it costs to run all of my gadgets / things that use electric or gas.
I was going to move to a fixed price tariff as it looks like I could save £300 a year doing this on forecast hikes in energy bills. But if I can get 20% back guaranteed due to low income and if I use this new gadget and save 20% from that and get cash back on top, given they are at this time extremely competitive anyway, I think I'll be quids in. What's more they may also be moving to fixed price tariff in the future, although no date set for this yet.

Their customer service is second to none, they are interested in conserving energy - so good for you greenies and I would highly recommend them.

The 20% discount sounds good - I guess that's part of the government's fuel poverty plan

Expect similar deals for those on low incomes from other suppliers shortly.

With regards to the energy meter - I'm sorry but a 20% saving using one of those probably really is too good to be true.
I guess you'll get something like this maplin supply
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=223573&doy=20m6

So that means plug in electrical items only - no gas appliances, no lights, no heating (other than small plug in devices), no oven/hob, no immersion heater, etc - i.e. none of all the big consumers with the possible exception of the fridge/freezer (and you won't be turning that off!)

So that leaves the smaller electrical items. I really think you'll struggle to save 20% of total expenditure even if you unplugged everything you reasonably could and didn't ever turn it on again.

  • Most of the large energy companies offer this (and Atlantic is just one brand name for Scottish & Southern - one of the 'big 6' suppliers). I know that EDF Energy also offer this service if you ask.
