I tried to close my Portman account over a month ago - filled in the forms at a Nationwide branch and managed to transfer most of my money to my Nationwide cheque account but they said I had to leave some money in the Portman. They sent the forms off to Head Office.
I am still waiting for my cheque and the branch office said they couldn't help. I had an instant access account but there is nothing instant about this.
Any ideas who I can complain to?

If its any comfort I hand-delivered mine through a Nationwide postbox many weeks ago (it was a Saturday and the branch was closed). I haven't had so much as an acknowledgement slip.
I'm in no hurry for the £18.81 in the account, but it suggests that there may be a backlog at Nationwide HQ.Up Tipp!0 -
i went in to close a portman fixed bond which had about £2528 in it, approx 2525 was put into my nationwide flex account, then the book was sent off. about a week later i recieved about £5 in the form a cheque which included interest as well. that was a while ago tho.0

As an ex Portman member I find the nationwide set up bureaucractic. Ii used to be able to give notice on a 90 day account by email with Portman, now I cannot do this and have to write or phone to the branch. The branch have to write to their head office!0

Not entirely sure why there has been a problem but it may be that the Branch you went into does not have the Portman computer programme running which allows closure of some accounts in the Branch. (Only Branches where there may have been a Portman Branch nearby and so they may have ex-Portman staff working there are likely to be running the programme).
Alternatively, there may have been an uncleared cheque which would have prevented immediate closure.
You are right that there is a backlog of work at Swindon Head Office - 8 week delay for ISA's when I last checked, although I believe that all instructions will be backdated when finally processed!
The situation doesn't look like it will be improving any time soon as many ex-Portman accounts are currently maturing and being sent to Head Office for processing. Nationwide is also in the ongoing process of migrating other ex-Portman accounts onto the Nationwide computer system on a rolling programme and also withdrawing certain ex-Portman accounts which is generating longer queues in the Branches again as customers call in to discuss their options.
