Bailiff Costs?

Hey all,
Well, rossendales have finally got back to me - they claim as they're dealing on behalf of the council in getting council tax back (and have not taken ownership of the debt), I have to go direct to the council for the proof of the debt. Last time I did this, they refused to deal with me, and told me Rossendales were dealing with it, nowt to do with them. So no-ne wants to prove the debt, but they want it paid!
Plus Rossendales are hitting me for nearly £50 in charges, and so far all I've had is a notice of van removal, to my home. They claim they sent a bailiff to the shop (6 months after it closed) and to my old home (6 months after we moved). Obviously no proof apart from an email telling me this. I wonder why the council sent them to the shop, knowing full well it had closed?
I'm not paying for this, as there's no proof they did sent anyone. They're saying I should have told them I moved, but I didn't know anything about this debt until a week or so ago! Can they do this? Thy're really getting nasty about not reoving these charges, which tells me they know d*mn well they've overstepped the mark - Rossendales tend to get really unpleasant when they know they're in the wrong.
So, any advice on moving forward? I'm still not convinced on this debt actually existing, but it's possible I suppose. The last few months at the shop were a complete nightmare, and I might have missed a demand - not a liability order though!!

Definitely catch Herbie
When it comes to Bailiffs she's a goldmine of info!!!
I'd speak to her before you call the council too
More to the point if you are contesting the debt (ie you as far as you were aware have paid your council tax for the shop up to date for when you vacated the premises and therefor you want them to proove that the debt is not for after you sold it and therefor not your responcibility) and thus they can't chase you until the debt is proved - or such is my understanding at least... But really it's Herbie you need

 Hi, know how you feel. We had problems with Rossendales too. They were demanding £100 a week from us for a debt we were disputing. They kept turning up and adding fees on. One of the bayliffs when we spoke to him on the phone said he was going to drop a budget form off. He did this and added £50 worth of charges on. They also tried to take my partners car which we later found out from the CAB they are not allowed to do as my partner would not have been able to get to work. When I complained they said it was a legal document. It was no such thing. In despair I went to CAB who were very helpful and sorted problem in les than a week. Rossendales really backed down when they knew CAB were informed, perhaps cause they knew their charges were unlawful.Hey all,
