Maths doesn't really add up though...

If she gets an upgrade and sells it for 200, that's the equivalent of £16.50 per month cheaper...So the answer to "why not get a sim only contract" is because it works out more expensive.

I've done both in the past...it just depends how badly you need the money...when I was a student, I sold all of my upgrades and saved the cash...now I'm working I like to treat myself to a new handset every 18 months...
it was a rough bit of maths to be honest and the majority of contract handsets won't make £200 on ebay, i won my phone and it was £180 in the shops, would have been lucky to get £120 for it, typicall contract phone you will get free is a samsung soul or a nokia 6500, samsung soul will make £150 tops and nokia similar cos a 6500 is about £200 new in somewhere like a network shop or cpw.

plus your sums don't add up for an 18 month contract which the majority are these days, 12 month contracts are awful deals these days, i've been fixing phones for years
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

  • I just renewed my contract. I actually phoned them to switch to PAYG. Orange offered me a new 'free' handset and halved the monthly fees. Give them a call and see what they can do for you.

Yeah, good point on the 18 month thing...a bit of an oopsy on my part...

As for getting £200 for a mobile, though, I've never found it a problem...I've sold 3 and have never got less than £180 for one - you just have to make sure you haggle the "most desirable" phone from your upgrade.

Been a couple of years since I sold one, though - and I think networks are getting tighter with the phones available on the cheaper rentals.

It's definitely worth calling the network and asking their best price, though. My gf did this with Orange and they knocked the £35/month she was paying down to £27 and threw in a new handset to boot...
  • I got a new contract with a new phone plenty of mins and texts, a nintendo wii and fit board, gonna sell my old phone, the wii and fit board on ebay - hopefully get min of 300 quid for them.

    Happy days!

I am ready to upgrade my mobile contract.

I get on well with the contract, and my current mobile is great. It may need a new battery soon but thats only a £4 odd on ebay. Its been chewed by one of my cats but it still works, and the screen is good.

Anyway, my point is i can get an upgrade phone that I could potentially sell on ebay for around £200. Do you think it would be worth it to get one and sell it, or should i treat myself to a new phone.

I was thinking that if my current phone does break within the 18 month contract i could always get a cheap PAYG phone?

    What would you do?

remember tho that when you upgrade to a new handset it's not actually yours to sell until you have finished the contract period. If for any reason (and i'm not saying you will) you break your contract fo any reason the mobile phone company can ask for the handset back if it is still within the contract period.(i work for a mobile phone company and although it is pretty rare i have seen it happen)

Also, I would no way sell a phone on Ebay any more, your very unlikely to ever see any money for it !

I'm not sure about O2 but when my contract ended with Orange rather than take a new handset I took a discount and it went down to £18 a month rather than £25.

I've sold around 5 handsets on ebay without a problem but if you do go down this route make sure it's done by recorded delivery with insurance. Just in case...

Watch those £4 batteries on Ebay, some of them might not be genuine and could be a hazard!

I have the same predicament, but decided on the new phone on my contract renewal, instead of £25 for a new battery.

i'm in the process of splitting old phones for parts, seriously much easier cos some things don't change over time (chargers etc.....)

i gave £30 2 and a half years ago for an lg phone, am now going to sell a genuine lg charger suitable for a newer, more modern phone (if someone i know's mate doesn't want it for the cost of postage lol)

Amy I rang O2 to cancel my contract a few months back.....retentions ended up giving me an upgrade (K800i), 600 x network anytime mins, unlimited O2 to O2 calls, 1000 minutes, an O2 treat every month for the grand sum of £20 a month.

Give them a ring and see what they'll do for you, ring with the intention to cancel.
Trying to sort my life out, and I'm going to get there!
