Slow Cooker Question

Can anyone help with a slow cooker question that has been puzzling me for a while please??

Can you cook meat in the slow cooker without any liquid?? I know you can roast stuff, but do you need to add any sort of liquid / fat? And what about something like chicken breasts? Can you just stick them in on their own or would they go wierd??

TIA

You need to add some sort of liquid- I sometimes just add a tin of chopped tomatoes- it cooks down and does not go too "wet".

You only need an inch or two of liquid but it should really be very hot.

I've never tried it - and every recipe I've ever seen (with one exception) has had at least some liquid in it. You need some to make the seal at the lid as the steam condenses.

The exception is: Curry_Queen's Whole Chicken in a Crock

I add 1/4pt of water to help prevent my crock from cracking. I don't know if it makes and difference but I don't want a cracked-crock.

I find chicken very dry if cooked in the slo-cooker off the bone so I do not cook fillet breasts in the slo-cooker. On the bone the meat if lovely. HTH

Thanks all. I couldnt understand how it would work, but just wanted to make sure. :o

Think I'll buy a couple of whole chucks from Costco and cook them in the crock to freeze as shredded chicken for C_Q's currys. But I'll remember the liquid!! :D

Throughly agree with all your comments re C_Q's recipes too. They are, and She is, inspirational, and totally scrumptious ;)

In case you didn't notice - there have been some new recipes added (as links) to her original recipe post in the Old Style Recipe Collection.

You can pick up the link to it from the first post in the thread below :)

    Curry Queen you're a star

Just to put a spanner in the works, I've got a Tower slow cooker recipe book which has a recipe for roast chicken portions! :D

2 chicken portions or 4 chicken drumsticks
    25g butter

    4-6 hours (portions)
    3-5 hours (drumsticks)

Rub the inside of the slow cooker with butter. Season the chicken pieces and place in the slow cooker for recommended time. The chicken may be fried in butter first is a browner finish is desired. Mixed herbs or tarragon may be sprinkled over the chicken before cooking to give extra flavour. Chicken portions should be cooked for 4-6 hours and drumsticks for 3-5 hours.

It must be borne in mind, however, that my slow cooker is nearly 25 years old (wedding present).

Hi Squeaky = yep thanks spotted that one yesterday and have my taste buds firmly shaped to try Murgh Makhani as soon as I get chance to make it. Sounds LUSH!!

Thanks Billieboy - My slow cooker is also a tower and is probably at least as old as yours - It was my mums, I'm nearly 28 and suspect it predates me, but it works and that's all that matters!! Those chicken portions sound yum too.

Heck - anyone got any waistband expanders handy??

Marks and Spencer have been selling their Free range Oakham chickens at 1/3 off.
They are truly scrumptious. Really succulent and come with a foil tray for oven cooking.
