The Nikon D40 is £272 from Amazon, and Nikon have a £30 mail-in cashback offer at the minute so it'll end up costing you £242.

Plus, they are also offering a free 2 year warranty.

without information about what you want to use it for thats a really tough question
I am on my 7th digital camera
I have a digital slr costing a lot of money and to compliment it i have a panasonic Lumix TZ4 compact which for its price and size is an amazing little machine you would spend somewhere in the region of £160 on it in the uk
Some of the pics i have taken have compared with my canon eos 40d
as with the question on what to buy go to a reputable camera shop and play with all the ones in your pricing area then go online and find the best price
Received £4541 reclaimed from Natwest :j:T

Yes, I would ask for a little more information - what are you looking for, a simple point-and-shoot, or something you can play around with and get good shots? Do you take a lot of photos indoors (e.g. at parties, on nights out) or more outside (family get togethers, etc)

Without knowing what you want I would recommend the fujifilm finepix series, This is the one I have:

I got it from ebuyer and it was arounf £160, this was at Christmas, and you will have enough left over in your budget to get a case and memory card for it. (Rechargeable batteries are useful too)

I like it because it's easy to use as a point and shoot but also has a manual mode so I can play around with it, too. The zoom is fantastic. However if you know you will never use the advanced features or zoom, it's not worth the extra money.

I have a panasonic FZ18. Paid £209 from comet online, with a discount code. That leaves you enough left to get an SD card (essential) and a camera case, plus a spare battery.

It is an amazing piece of kit and I am absolutely thrilled with it. But I take a lot of photos of birds on along zoom, so it meets my needs perfectly.

It really depends what you want it for. I also have a canon 'point and shoot' compact camera with a wide angle lens that I use for holiday snaps, parties etc. It has a smaller zoom, but takes great photos and importantly for those occasions, fits easily into a handbag or pocket.

As others say it depends a lot on what you want from it. I have a Canon Powershot A650 Great little camera can get them for £190 ish.
Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

I would go for a digital SLR. If you want a point and shoot I have a canon A640 which has amazing picture quality, they're not as small as the IXUS range but the picture quality is much better. My only problem is the flash which is not great (like most digital cameras).
