Not sure if this is the right place - re. Brighthouse

Hi. This is my 1st post on this forum so please forgive me if I have put it in the wrong place.
I have just gotten a laptop from Brighthouse. Bad credit problems won't allow me to get one from anywhere else!
Ok, now the problem is the optional service cover. I have been told that because I am on a low income I have to pay this (it adds up to an extra £600) Because if it breaks down I couldn't afford to get it fixed elsewhere! I returned to the store a couple of days later and asked the manager about this as nowhere on my contract does it state that the optional service cover has to be payed if you're on a low income! She also said I have to pay it. Surely this can't be right! Optional means optional right?? Can anyone help? Is there anything I can do to have it removed?
Mant thanks

I am truly shocked! Though I prob shouldn't be given some of the stuff i've seen on Watchdog.
This is WRONG WRONG WRONG!!
This woman is mis-selling and you DO NOT have to take up this cover-it is optional regardless of your circumstances.
She has forced you to buy this to meet her own targets for which she gets rewarded.
I don't work for Brighthouse but I do have a lot of experience in the financial service industry and this woman has played on your situation to gain for herself.
You need to get this dealt with asap so as you're not paying for it.
I suggest you go back and get the persons name (if you don't know it already) and that of the manager and write to the Head Office.
I've given up going into places to complain as you can't get a record of whats been said.
Keep records of everything you send and if it were me I would be stressing the concern and worry this has caused you.
This woman has taken advantage of you and likely others too. When you get to the end of your tether, tie a knot and hang on.0 -
This firm have a long history of treating badly the most vulnerable sections of society, as can be seen from this thread on the Consumer Action Group :-

Look at post #13 especially.

There was a story over on the Digital Spy forum about a Conservative MP opening a new Brighthouse shop in Kings Lynn. Somebody wrote to this MP and asked why he was associating himself with somebody like Brighthouse. Wouldn't he be better employed getting something like a Credit-Union established in the town? This would be more beneficial to people with money problems. The answer he gave was that "he had researched the company and found that there were an ethical and honest organization". This is the same company that was kicked out of France because of their dubious business practices. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0

Brighthouses optional service cover is exactly what it says OPTIONAL.
You are well in your rights to choose not to have it,of course they will try there best to change your mind.Your laptop will automatically come with a 1 year manufacturers guarentee anyway so any problems you have in the first year can be dealt with by them,I would go to their website and register the product this will make sure if you product has any faults within the 1st year and maybe longer you are definatley covered.Ive been a customer with Brighthouse for over 5 years and I know exactly what they are like so I can understand where you are coming from. The important thing with them is to know your rights and dont let them walk all over you cause they will.0 -

might find themselves in a position of needing an essential household item and not having immediate access to cash to pay for it?
Hmmm... from what I remember of their adverts, they don't sell food and water, but rather large LCD TVs, PS3s and, like this poster, laptops and PCs.
Not essential household items, and if they really wanted them they should have saved up and bought it outright a few months down the line (saving the taxpayer a few hundred pounds in the process)poppy100 -
i beleive there is a cooling off period- check paperwork and get cancellation letter in ASAP- by special delivery if you can afford it..
makes me laugh that they 'insist' on the additional service contract because OP (and others) may not be not be able to afford repairs.. why on earth are they giving credit then, to someone who may not be able to pay??Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
