PC World

Options
I originally bought my laptop from pc world in may last year so its only just over a year old.
I took it in to the store on tuesday as I got a pc healthcheck done. It was free as I have got insurance with them. I brought it home on Wednesday evening, turned it on and everything was working absolutely fine. I then turned it on this morning and it came up with an error to do with windows system 32 or something. So i phoned pc world and they said to do a system restore, i would loose all my files that way. But it seemed like the only option to get it working again. I waited for a little while and then another error come up. I phoned them again and was on the phone for over 30 minutes (and its an 0870 number). They then told me to do a test this test showed that my hard drive had failed and i needed a new one. It was running absolutely fine up until I had this pc healthcheck. I am now not a happy bunny and will be writing in to complain. They told me I will have to wait 10-14 days plus more till the collect for it be repaired. Surely I shouldnt have to wait as its blaitently there fault the hard drive has gone. Not good at all!!

Assuming the hard disc drive hasn't fully failed but is just corrupted, you could probably be able to load another bootable operating system from a cd/dvd/usbstick that would enable you to navigate and backup your files/documents etc to another drive. Probably posting this in the techie forum would get more advice about your laptop problem.

True, there's a version of linux that boots from CD. Can't recall the name but ask on the Techie board and they'll give you it. I used it when my laptop suddenly decided it couldn't find essential windows files and wouldn't boot from the hard drive. I was able to go on and copy everything to an external drive.

    Edit: It was called Knoppix.

Any live version of linux - Mandriva, Ubuntu, Imagine, Noppix but the best bet is UBCD http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/ or Parted magic http://partedmagic.com/wiki/PartedMagic.php with which you might just be able to fix your hd with a bit of work.

I stopped fixing peoples PC's and Car because of this sort of thing. "since you changed my battery my wheel bearings have been making a noise" "since you took that virus of my pc I cant play cd's on it". panic and superstition go hand in hand.

You do NOT lose any files doing a System Restore. This feature restores only your system files. It does not affect personal files.

    where in the world!

I saw someone sucking a computer mouse once whilst the technician watched in amazement. It is so silly listening to and watching computer illiterate people.

How I laughed. Do you think the original poster would also suck a computer mouse?
