I had some good advice before so I thought I would come back for some more,

If the PC downstairs has an ethernet port you need to get a straight through Cat 5 ethernet cable, it may also be described as a patch cable. If the PC doesn't have an ethernet port you can get a card to put in it to give it one.

Does the modem/router have wireless as that would be another option and a lot easier and neater.

Hello BillScarab have just been looking at patch cables wondering if that is what I wanted. they come in different colours does that matter we would need about 20m. I am looking on e-buyer.com at the moment. Whats with snagless

Would the cable go from the pc to the router or pc 2 pc? sorry if I seem dense

The network cables that ebuyer.com sell should be fine. Snagless just means that it's fitted with a bootee at each end so that the release clip can't snag on things when pulling the cable through.

This one is as high a spec as you would need (probably better than you need unless you're running Gigabit Ethernet over it):

If you can get by with 15m then you'll save a few quid.

Each PC needs it's own cable to the router. If you wanted to connect 2 PCs together directly you would need a crossover cable.
