Philips MP4 player, is this like an ipod?

Afternoon everyone and apologies if (when) i appear dim.

I have bought my daughter (10yrs old) one of these for her xmas present (aint i organised??:j)

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-6522.aspx

I would like to get her some accessories to go with this but everything i see on the market is for an Ipod and I dont know if these accessories can be used for this.

Can anyone help me find an easy way to spot if i can use something with this?

For instance if i see something in ASDA/TESCO/etc that seems a bargain, how will i know if i can use it with the philips MP4 player.

Sorry, reading over this I seem REALLY dim.

Hi there, I very much doubt that this will have same connectivity as an ipod.

But what kind of 'accessories' did you want?

Speakers would be simple, if you get a universal speaker dock, it will just connect through the headphone jack....if we're talking cases, i just had a quick look, and there aren't even any on ebay!

Do you know when it was released? it may explain the lack of accessories :)

Any particular reason you just didn't get her an iPod?

They're only about £20 more expensive, have far more accessories, are fully compatible with the iTunes Store, and I'll bet are easier to use.

I'm not being very helpful I know, but I'm just curious.

Buying one of these is like buying supermarket trainers, very uncool.
If you are already looking for accessories you will have found that there are none available for the Philips, my advise is take it back and get an i-pod.
So I'm sorry but I'm in the camp of the previous poster.

Apple will even engrave them for you for free,

Thanks for all your help. I think i may just take it back and get an upgrade to an Ipod. Anyone recommend a particular type? :-)

Well prepared yes, but buying electronic items this far in advance may not be such a good idea, electronics stuff only ever goes down in price, or stays the same with more features.

I think the 4GB iPod Nano would do her just fine.

However, the Mac Rumours buyers guide advises to wait, as there is likely to be a new version released in the near future:

    http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iPod_nano

As you can see, it is updated on average every 268 days, and it has been 288 days since the last update.

So if you buy now, she might find herself getting an "old" iPod for Christmas!

    Morning everyone

The reason we bought it now rather than waiting for xmas is because we had TESCO coupons and we got a lot off our shopping. I have a receipt for it, we paid £59.97 for it and the shopping came to £55 along with lots of other shopping so i feel that i cant take i back as then the other shopping would be free so i will take it back and do an exchange, sell the item on ebay and put the money away for the Nano ipod but wait till nearer the time before buying it.

Thanks for all your help and advice!!!

Except for the PS3 which stayed the same price but lost more and more features the longer I waited to buy it...

It started with 60gig drive and 4 usb ports memory card slots, and backwards compatibity with ps2 games.
Now it only has 20gig drive 2 usb no memcard slots no backwards compatibility.

    But the price didnt drop....

    Evening

Thought i would update you all on my wee problem.

Checked out the prices of the Ipod nano at Tesco and took it back and exchanged it and paid the extra, the young lad who served me was very helpful and gave me a brand new receipt for it!!!

So...... Then OH took it back to another store and got a refund as i took the advice about technology moving on so will just keep the money in an account till nearer xmas.

Then he bought me an ipod shuffle !!! YEAAAA!!!!

Hmm..... I may be back asking how to put songs on it!!!!
