this is tricky - i would argue that the "compo" money was to replace your own money which you had had to use to pay the rent in the absence of LHA money - so it could be argued that it was part of your savings

this is purely my own opinion

I would agree with Clutton it could be counted as savings. Unlikely to be counted as Income as if it was paid by council for LHA the refernce on the bank statment will show it as a LHA payment. The LA SHOULD be able to spot it as their own code.

    Devil's advocate here:

They may consider that you paid your rent from savings and the backpay has gone to replenish your savings pot. They may say they expected that the back rent would have gone to the landlord in rent owed and/ or clearing any resulting arrears or to clear your overdraft created by the lack of LHA.

If you were being cautious you may want to give the back rent to your friend who lent you the money to pay your rent at the time. ;)

tell them you owed a someone who borrowed you the rent money.....and payed it back
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
