Can't get internet unless other laptop is online

I don't know if anyone can help. We have a wireless router but it kept disconnectiong so my OH used it with a connection wire and it works fine. Howver I now I have a laptop too which has a wireless card, but Ican only connect to the internect when my OH is also online. Any ideas???

    My router used to keep cutting out, but try updating the router firmware, that worked for me! Usually on the label on the router it will tell you the router IP and normally, from there you can update the firmware! It can't be a security issue because if you had a WEP key or any other form of internet security key you wouldn't be able to connect at all!
    Your OH's laptop may be acting as a bridge between the router and your laptop, which could explain why you can only use it when your OH is online, try checking that your laptop has a connection to the router (check on your laptop and also check router-side, which shows the connected devices) not your OH's laptop!

    You need to change the wireless mode of operation, will be in the wifi adapter properties to change it from ad-hoc to infrastructure.
    Also bear in mind some routers only allow new clients for a time after switch on, say 10mins so you may need to power down router to get your new lappy setup with it.
