well! It looks like the choice is between dulux and crown, whoever can come up with the best colour. I'm gonna try the FB matchpot first thought if I can find one - just to try out the quality and no of coats needed.

Its really good to know about the difference in paint quality though and thanks everyone for your great help

We now have two coats of Pale Powder Estate Emulsion on our recently plastered kitchen wall and it looks lovely :) Really pleased with the colour which does go between green and blue depending on light.

I think that you get what you pay for in paint and F&B's colours are somehow different in terms of the mix and the depth of colour once they are on.

F&B tester pots are over £3 though and you've missed 10% off day at Homebase!

some people can be really funny when it comes to colours
i remember when i served my time my old boss was at this massive million pound house and the "lady" of the house was ever so ever so.
couldn't decide on the colour and opted for an off white
not happy with white and too dark for magnolia, she asked for half and half which is easy enough to mix .

first put a few brushes of white and then maggy on extra bits of gyproc to let her see the difference , then put on some half n half too
not happy with all 3 she left the room, old boss added little bit of water to half n half and mixed it up, shouted her back in and put it on and she was over the moon
"that's the excact colour i was looking for , thanks ever soo much":D

lol just goes to show you the jonesys' arn't always setting the example

i still laugh at that to this day when i tell it............ well that and painting the exterior of the wrong house in the street lol, but thats another story.:rotfl:

I know this - don't make assumptions. I didnt rush to Homebase with the ten percent brigade because I want to think this through and get it right rather than splash discount all over my walls. And Homebase is an expensive store. I can buy Dulux or Crown cheaper that ten per cent off at Homebase.

I'm not looking to impress with old paint pots or colour cards lying around. I just found a colour I liked. Seems this thread has got a bit snooty. But thanks to everyone - especially the decorators - who have advised on quality.

That's not very fair aah. Everybody has given you their genuine opinion and advice, which is exactly what you asked for. Nobody has been at all snooty as far as I can see.

I'm sorry you feel I was being snooty. This is a moneysaving forum and I'm not ashamed to be one of the 'ten percent brigade'. (I'd prefer it to be the 'twenty percent brigade' though. :p ) I only suggested Homebase because they are one of the few nationwide stockists of F&B and you had commented that their paint was hard to find.

I'm not suggesting you rush into anything either. However, my partner and I are trying to stop spending days and weeks trying to choose things as we just go round and round in circles. I've missed many a bargain trying to choose. I often say there is too much choice! Recently we went to a kitchen shop that was closing down. They had an undermount sink reduced from £300 to £29 and still we were umming and ahhing. In the end my father-in-law picked it up, paid the man and walked out of the shop.

If it's any help to your decision, F&B paint doesn't store well either it goes off once it's been open and smells like bad eggs once it has turned!

My Dad swears by Crown paint, says it really does cover in one coat - but I love Ecos Paints anyway! They do a great range of colours, are very matt if you want them to be and they don't smell of paint, so you can work in the room straight after painting. That is worth the cost alone to me, but they do also cover very well and the big tin is huge!
