These two icons for "chat" and "notifications" seem welded to the bottom right of each Facebook browser page and kill the performance on my browser (Firefox), any idea how to disable them, are they Java based?

You can minimize the feature and stop receiving chat messages by going 'offline'. To do so, open the chat menu in the bottom right of your browser (the button on the very right of the bar). Click "Go Offline" to stop receiving chat messages. You will not appear in any of your friends "Online Friends" section and your friends cannot message you. Clicking "Go Online" will allow your friends to contact you again and see that you are online in Chat. This should reduce the amount of system resources this is using but at this time there is no way to completely remove the Chat feature

I've read online that this Firefox add-on lets you customize how javascript works, so you may be able to stop the bar loading?

I haven't tried it, because the bar doesn't affect the speed on my pc!

    Hope this helps!

Thanks noddy, unfortunately it's already set to be off line, it's just the annoying two icons, I find that once it's been loaded, the whole of the browser slow down, and if you open several facebook tabs, it gets slower and slower. Never get this on any other site, so it must be something with those icons. Running NoScript too...

Seems very odd to me.....just checked facebook website, and they themselves say there is no way to turn it off!
I hope they'll change that soon!

I couldn't find any reference to it in the help, their site can be a complete pain, a mix of insecurities and mess all round, just needs many more options so everything can be customised, and less data disappearing out to 3rd party applications.

It's more the removal of the two icons, rather than the removal of the chat feature I was after...

I think the whole thing is called facebook chat, and unfortunately, it all comes under that name, so in that case, i don't think it can be removed :(

    Sorry!
