To cap or not to cap?

Hi,
Please can anyone offer some help to a very confused energy user!
I joined Npower, sign online 8, in December 07. With all the recent doom and gloom in the news about 40% rise in feul prices I feel I should make a decision now rather than later about whether to cap or not.
I am paying £99 per month for gas and electric.
£47 Electric
£52 Gas.
my rates for Electric are up to 728kWh inc VAT.............24.89p
over 728kWH inc VAT...............................................................5.60p
my rates for Gas are up t 4572 kWh inc VAT.....................3.821p
over 4572 kWh inc VAT............................................................2.149p
I have not yet received any paper bills from Npower, they said that the meters are only read twice a year!
I spoke to them last week asking if there was a better tarrif for me to go on.
(I had gone to a comparison website to check there and Npower came in the top 3 list for beter deals for me, so decided to ask them directly for a better deal)
I was totally confused when I came off the phone as I felt I had not been given much help. basically I was told that I couldn't cap unless I came off the signonline 8 deal and went on a standard customer rate, which was much higher!
Is there anyone out there in the same position as me, and if so have they stayed with npower or jumped ship to another provider!
any advice would be much appreciated.Thanks.
