Could you not leave your PC downloading the program at night after you've finished using it? Then instal it next morning.
Sadly not. One of the delights of dial-up is that the isp usually set a maximum time for a single session. It’s two hours in my case, which is fairly typical. Provided the download restarts from where it left off I could spread it over several sessions but currently the problem only occurs with this one site.bingo_bango wrote: »I would actually get onto the site in question and point this out to them.
I may well do just that but I would like to be clearer about a few details.bingo_bango wrote: »
The designer has made this site optimal for Netscape (it displays fine using FF), but the problem with how they've done it is that it means menus all bunch up in IE. The html isn't quite clean enough. Considering how many people still use IE, I'm amazed they haven't spotted this.
Before my original post I had also tried accessing the site from a pc in a library. The library machine also uses IE but it displayed correctly. Any ideas how that could happen? I had wondered if it might be a browser problem but I assumed not as it did display on the library machine.bingo_bango wrote: »Having viewed the source, they just downloaded a script from a website, which was written in 2001! Any wonder it doesn't display properly. The site needs a complete revamp to ensure compliance across browsers.
Sounds about right!Don't get Java and Javascript confused, they're two entirely different things. Javascript is provided by default by most modern web browsers. Java is used for running 'applets', small programs embedded in websites. It's use isn't very common nowadays, as Flash has superseded most of its uses.
So if you're having Javascript problems, installing Java won't help, and it's probably not worth the time downloading and installing it
Sorry if I used the wrong term. I went to the site provided by Wombat and it said I do not have that software.
Do you mean that IE is not a modern web browser and that is why it does not provided Javascript?0 -

Javascript (or, more precisely, the JRE) needs to be downloaded separately. Internet Explorer 7 is a modern browser, if a bit quirky!!0 -
Thanks Wombat.
I know I could use a download manager but I've always managed not to need one. I don't think it's worthwhile just for this one little site.
What I meant about the other (IE) machine displaying correctly, was that I thought bingo bango was suggesting that IE could not handle the display at all. It was probably just the way I read his post.
I would have thought that using JRE for what seems like such a basic site is a bit excessive, especially when it doesn't display correctly! I think I'll send them a note about it, mentioning the points you chaps have noted.
Thanks again for all your help. :beer:0
