Free chickens!!!

Just this minute seen this on HotUKdeals

According to yesterday's Metro, 13,500 egg-laying chickens need good homes otherwise they will be slaughtered.

from their website:

http://www.brightonanimalaction.org/

"CHICKEN LIBERATION 2008

Yet again Brighton Animal Action have the chance to give these 'end of lay' birds an extended life. We will be going into the farm in mid-July. If you can take any birds or know anyone who can please contact us. We MUST know before the beginning of July.

If you can't take any chickens, perhaps you would consider helping us with the practicalities of rescuing them. We need boxes, tape, hay and money. We may even need some drivers. Almost 3,500 birds were saved from slaughter last year. Let's try and save more in 2008."

If you fancy a chicken as a pet, would like to save one from slaughter, fancy making your own fresh KFC.......or......for other purposes contact:

Brighton Animal Action meet the first and third Wednesday of every month at the Cowley Club on London Road (A23) at 7pm. New faces are always welcome.
If you can't make the meetings but want to get involved we can be contacted at:

I wish i was closer as i'd take some. Already got 4 ex battery hens that give me 4 eggs a day, not bad when the battery farms class them as useless and dont lay eggs.

    I love my chickens

I have no objection to taking a few ex-battery farm chickens, and would do so myself if I was better placed to accommodate them.
However, beware of these groups and their seemingly innocent agendas. Watch the emotive language used and consider the effect it's intended to have: "liberate / free / save from slaughter" - these are after all, legally raised birds in UK factory farms (If consumers did not buy the product ...).
Then look at wider aims of these groups: among the laudable environmental aims are other agendas, such as putting so-called animal rights over the rights of people to enjoy improved medical interventions into acute conditions, or the "right" of a vocal minority to intimidate ground-breaking researchers in ANY way they see fit.
Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission. Thank you.

Considering the hens are to be saved from mass slaughter, that KFC comment is rather strange. Great idea though, but isn't it an endless task when the farm will just replace them all again and again and again? Are these hens healthy or are they going to have health issues from their past housing conditions? Otherwise I'm all for it.

I know that the bhwt check the hens for poor health, clip their nails and trim their beak. Also battery hens are given all of their vaccinations by the farmers so they should be in good health. :D

Is this true? It seems strange to me. Surely this would cost the farmer much more than simply having these birds destroyed?

Apparently the farmers are happy to give the chickens away.
