Sofas, store cards and finding a good deal....

my partner has found the sofa he wants in house of fraser, it is £3600 (there is %20 off due to the manufacturer having a sale, which is due to an increased delivery time because the factory will be shutting for a long holiday over summer......)
The sales assistant said if he were to take out a store card he'd get 10% off plus £95 back in vouchers because he'd earn points.
He would pay the amount off in full straight away and would only be getting the store card to use the 10% then closing it.
First off is this a good deal? are there any catches he should be looking out for?
Secondly does he have to pay with the store card to get the 10% discount? or can he just take advantage of the 10% for opening an account?

That is a lot for a sofa in virtually anyones money!
And he will need to use the card to get the discount but he can just pay it off without incurring interest if he does it when he gets the bill.
Be careful with an investment lie that when moving house - I have three suites as a result of ones not fitting in different houses - admittedly I can have two suites in one house but had to get one that the arms could come off to fit in one house. That sofa is now in my sister in law's annex. Luckily it was a HoF one that a friend couldn't fit in her new place that we paid £200 for!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

how on earth did you get a nice sofa for £200?? must've been a good friend and an even better discount!
We spent 6 hours today trawling shops, the cheapest was £2500, most was just over £5000 (with the salesman knocking £900 off) admittely neither of us know a thing about sofas (except what we, or rather he- it's his sofa, like)
He wanted modular as he wanted an L shape, leather, by Natuzzi (heard it was a good make) Didn't even try land/house of leather or dfs as we'd heard awful horror stories (warrantees voided because the sofa "had been sat on" and poisonous sofas that landed people in hospital with rashes and scars!)0 -
Sounds like your looking in the expensive shops to me! £3600 for a sofa for a MSEr sounds alot to me

Have you tried Homebase? We got a pair of 2 and 3 seater leather sofas from Homebase for about £800 and £80 back in Spend & Save vouchers which were very quickly spent.
Also try Furniture Village as they seem to get good reviews.
If you are going for a known make i daresay you could find a better deal for the same sofa by looking online. If i recall correctly from previous searches in the forum here sofasofa get rated highly. Personally i would be wary buying sofas online without sitting on them first . I did just that with an Argos sofabed and it ended up going back!

Ikea do a really nice modular sofa that can be arranged appropriately with big soft cord fabric. I've got expensive taste but think it's lovely. Sorry, but you wouldn't catch me dead on one of the Homebase sofas and believe me, H has already tried that one on me!
Yes, very good friend who also got a very good discount by the sofa being ex display. It's incredibly comfy, stuffed with feathers etc and solid framed but really dirty after only 10 months of my kids climbing all over it and it being cream
My other two suites weren't bad for the price either. £1100 for one which is going as strong as ever after 8 years! from Allders half price in one of their sales and a beaten leather one which is from HALO (really lovely furniture) which we managed to blag from a supplier to the restaurant business for £1200 (trade price).
No matter how much people hate it, Ikea does provide very good value for money in many areas of it's business. I'll trail around everywhere for a bargain but often end up back in Ikea and you can't compare the prices for what you need. House of Fraser will provide you with quality, no doubt but if you're going the department store/brand name route then I'd wait for the other sales to start. Even the HoF sale doesn't appear to have taken off properly - none of their concessions are reduced yet. Things like sofas aren't off the peg, so you don't need to panic that the last one has gone!
btw, the 'rash' episode has been revealed to be the silicon packets you often get in shoes etc to stop them from going mouldy whilst in storage, not the sofas themselves. Every retailer except some random one that I'd never heard of, pulled the ranges quickly. Read about any major retailer and you will hear horror stories.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

We are in the market for a new sofa, and we would say that £1000 is good enough for us. That would be a leather recliner probably from land of leather etc.
Its good for us, as in 18months we would probably replace it with another sofa.
Have to way up how long you want to keep it, against how much you pay for it, you may buy it for £3600, have it a week then decide you dont like it.
That £3600 sofa becomes £600-800 2nd hand..0 -
i thought a £3000 sofa would last a long time? neither of us have children so it'll just be used for sitting about watching tv... even that won't happen all the time, boyf will be living alone and will be away with work a lot...
I thought it would be an investment, that it'd last at leats 5 years with good care and cleaning? (investment as in it'd last, not as in holding it's value)0 -
We did the tour of the sofa stores, but as usul, put off by the false pricing policies & 'free' interest deals.
So thought it'd be Ikea again, but even they didn't have what suited us, once we sat on them & looked at colours.
We've now had the HUGE York corner suite from Homebase. It's £879 at the moment, but we paid £700 - 10% day discount, plus whatever we got in Homebase loyalty vouchers - about another 10%.
Bought on price & fit in ability, as Doozergirl mentions, you can end up with some spare ones, every time you move house. So £3600 is a HUGE price to pay, I'd agree!
Our £700ish might well not be enough - we'll see.
This was in the January sale & it WILL be unboxed in the next couple weeks....we hope!!

Even a crappy DHS sofa should last at least 5 years!0 -
