Car Insurance for New Driver

My OH has just bought a car, but he hasn't passed his test yet which is booked for November. He wanted the car now, so he can practice before the test. I couldn't insure him on mine as the terms of my policy state you must hold a licence for a year before you can go on the insurance, and it's not a suitable car for a learner.

Insurance for provisional drivers is very expensive, so I was wondering the best way to do it.

1) If he insures it as a provisional now, will they reduce the price for the rest of the year once he passes?

2) Can I insure in my name with him as an additional driver, then cancel it and get a policy in his name once he passes?

3) Any other suggestions on the cheapest way of doing it? He'd want social and domestic cover for now, then upgrading it to cover commuting once he passes his test. He is over 30, so he's not a boy racer!
Here I go again on my own....

He should be able to find insurance for himself as a learner driver with you as the name driver. It may not be as expencive as if he had passed his test as he will not be allowed out without a qualified driver next to him.

There has been a discussion on this before. Try looking in searches.
    Hope this helps.

  • hi for new drivers try quinn-direct.co.uk - saved me £500 over budgets cheapest - i took it out as a leaner driver (as you can still gain the years no claim bonuses) when i passed my test it only went down £50 anyway.

Overall it will be best to get it in his own name so he can start working on the years no claim stuff - thats what i did. First year £1400 (not using quinn direct) the next year with quinn with a years no claim - £550 and i'm only 23!!!
