What ever paint finish is on the wardrobes you will need to sand down first. Its not only acting as a key for the paint but also removes all sorts a dirt.

The difference between egg shell and satinwood is the name only. In days of old you a choice of gloss finish or eggshell, in this day and age paint manufactures think we need more choice and so they have renamed eggshell to satinwood, soft sheen etc, etc

Even though they are just stained, you still need to sand them, and before you eggshell or satinwood them, you will need at least 2-3 undercoats.
The first undercoat thinned down, as it will soak up the paint, and your hands will be killing you if you do it neat.

Eggshell is a very flat finnish, wheras satinwood, has a soft sheen, much nicer IMO, whenever I paint wardrobes, whether stained or MDF, I always advise the client to go with Satinwood.

Satinwood is supposed to be self undercoating, which works okay on existing white, but as your going from dark to white, then 2-3 UC, foloowed by 2 satinwood.
Use oilbase, its more hardwearing, but leave 24 hours between each coat of satinwood.
