NPower Tariff

Is anyone else with nPower? Where on the bill does it tell you which tariff you are on?! I'm trying to switch to a cheaper tariff using Switch with Which?, but I can't find which tariff we are on.

I've tried phoning nPower, and am currently on hold - 30 minutes and counting...!

I think you will find they are busy at the moment dealing with those they have overcharged, those that are taking them to court...and Ofgems investigation!

    Lol, that would be it!

It's sorted now, and we've moved tariff, saving several hundred pounds a year.

I have no time for NPower and their disgraceful methods.

    However a couple of points:

Firstly you have saved nothing yet!

Secondly for all their sins, Npower come out pretty well on all the comparison sites. So it would be very interesting to see how you conclude you will be saving "several hundred pounds a year"

Perhaps you could give us details?

Bear in mind that you need to enter your annual kWh in any comparison site.

They admitted to us that their 'standard duel fuel' tariff is quite expensive, compared with a cheaper tariff called something like 'online 11'. After finally getting through on the phone, during which we read the meters and worked out our usage, our monthly direct debit is now down by around £35 per month. Now I know which tariff we are on, I will be keeping an eye on things, and moving to another company if necessary.

    That is absolutely meaningless!

They have made that offer simply to retain your custom.

Contact another company and tell them what you are now paying(i.e. the new figure which is £35 less) and they will quote you a lower DD.

Ring another company with that lower DD figure and you will get a better offer etc etc.

All of these companies want your custom(so the call centre operators can earn their commission) and they will quote you as low a figure as is needed to get you to swop; and in this case NPower to retain your custom.

All that will happen is that you will build up a debit balance that will have to be paid back.

£35 a month is £420 a year and unless your current bills are several thousand pounds a year, you will not save £420 a year!!

NPower changed me from their online to their standard tariff without me knowing, so god knows how long I have been paying extra.. Now in the process of moving to BG.

To be fair Cardew , it the poster has ideas of their usage and unit costs and understands meter readings etc then they should already know if the decrease by £35 will cover costs.

    Agreed - without question!

However they didn't know what tariff they were on, and are not certain of their new tariff.

All they have stated is that after a phone conversation their DD debit annual total has been reduced by £420 a year which they believe is all savings.

So if they have an average consumption that is a saving of over 40%!!

If their bills are double the UK average at £2,000 pa that is still a saving of 20%.

If you read NPowers website here:

    http://www.npower.com/web/Savewithnpower/index.htm

They state that a household on their standard tariff using the UK average can save £177pa by switching.

Those savings include the large discounts for people who now switch to paying by DD and get dual fuel discount!

However the OP is already on a dual fuel tariff and pays by DD so gets discounts already.

Using that NPower link for my postcode I entered in 20,500kWh and 3,300kWh for NPower’s standard tariff and they came up with their sign on line 11 tariff.

On that tariff electricity would cost an extra £5.16 more than their standard tariff(note extra!!!) and gas would be £76.01 cheaper. So an annual saving £70.85 or £5.90 a month.

Double the average UK consumption to 41,000kWh for gas and 6,600kWh for electricity and your monthly DD would reduce by £18.61. This would mean that your previous DD would have been over £150 a month to cover costs.

So do you think that a reduction of £35 monthly is a realistic estimate of the OP’s savings?

The point I am making is that time after time people are misled on these Boards by people claiming that that they are making huge savings simply by switching; many of these claims are just fantasy!
