The case of the scattered dead flies

I have a wicker picnic backet in the corner of living room which only contains some old photos of my Mum's. Everytime I go to that area to vacuum, there is a scattered pile of small flies similar to 4/5mm fruit flies. Also occasionally there is a little pile of sawdust under the basket.
The area is a little damp (as is the rest of the flat), but I wipe down that area with a diluted bleach mix to keep the walls and door edging free from mould.
What on earth are these flies are what are they doing here! Would be very grateful if someone could shed some light on this for me.
