...along with the "pay interest from the second day after" statement makes me think the transfer has to go through the Barclays collection account somehow?

I'm not bothering with Issue 2. I'll keep issue 1 and when (not if!!) the rate drops I'll vote with my feet.

I've tried looking up Birmingham Midshires on Fitch but get nowhere. Whereas Bradford and Bingley is a negative. Is there any feedback?

No - see this table all HBOS subsidiaries operating under the same FSA authorisation are shown in blue and numbered (1).
