Red Panda -this is not a situation best suited to be dealt with via a forum.
You need to take your actual contract and get some qualified local advice urgently. These are just the type of LLs that the Tenancy Relations Officers like to know about. The local town or city council has a housing department with a Private Sector Team - this is where the TRO works - and their advice is free. If you do use a CAB you must ask for someone who specialises in LL & T work. The TRO can help with letters, phone calls and if you wouldlike them to, they can make arrangements to meet the LL themselves with or without you present Another poster has also suggested your Uni as a source of support - do they have a welfare officer?
The LL may have started the let off as individual rooms ( with your contract actually only stipulating your room rent is due) and quickly discovered that he can take advantage. Theres a strong chance that he is not complying with all sorts of regs. Do try to ring and make appointment today.

As tbs says, get specialized advice urgently. You have been taken advantage of and could even be a victim of an elaborate ruse. There may just be a way out of this for you (hopefully).FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0
