Reading 3 year old wanting more of a challenge

My lad likes his 'horrible science' stuff, though he took some of the jokes very literally at first.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Ooh - I loved (and still do) Laura Ingalls Wilder's books! I'm thinking of getting my niece "Little house on the prairie" for her birthday. I know Big Woods should come first, but I too am a bit worried about "butchering time" - she's prone to nightmares! Besides, I just love the Christmas chapter when Mr Edwards meets Santa Claus:oGingham_Ribbon wrote: »We tried the Little House on the Prairie books with our 4 year old but he was a bit upset by the chapter on killing the pig. (Raising a veggie seems to go like that sometimes!) but maybe that wouldn't bother him? They're lovely stories. Maybe the long winter would be one to avoid for now though.
For a boy - "Farmer Boy" (same author) would be good - but maybe when he's a bit olderC'est le ton qui fait la chanson0 -
I wouldn't get horrid Henry books, my DD loves that sort of thing (she has a few books) but my 3 year old DS goes around telling everyone to 'shut up' and called them 'worm'!!! (he saw it on the tv version)....
oh happy days!lol xxx
edited to say..he doesn't get to watch it now!You may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0 -
Wasn't sure whether 3 year old should be reading horrid henry as the title suggests horridness...was going to vet that one before handing it on.
mrcow, OH first read LOTR aged 8, he's read it every year ever since then and is one of those sad people who can tell you precisely where Gimli was standing in the battle of helms deep.
I love OH to pieces and he's a very normal person in most scenarios, but I am rather turned off when he gets started on LOTR trivia...say no more.:rolleyes:Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

'Horrid' Henry is a normal boy in the main, he's messy, doesn't like girls (especially 'Moody Margaret' who lives next door), thinks life's not fair when he's not allowed sweets or gets sent to his room, not keen on school (prefers comics or monsters etc). It's compounded by his younger brother 'Perfect Peter' who is an angel child.
A couple of examples of the stories - one he goes to a French restaurant with his family, makes a fuss before going because he wants 'normal' food but his parents tell him not to be horrid and just eat what he orders without a fuss - gets to the restaurant ends up ordering escargots as he's convinced his cousin is trying to gross him out and there's no way it could be snails. Turns out he actually loves the snails and his family, not understanding french, have ordered stuff they don't like and he turns the table on them using the lines they used on him about having to try new foods etc.
Or when he tries to trick the tooth fairy after his younger brother loses a tooth before him (then tries to loose teeth by eating tons of sweets and getting into trouble for it - somewhat unsurprisingly his tooth falls out when he eats an apple0 -

:rotfl: I have visions of me queuing up with him at the lead figure shop.......I do love him, but he is going to be a nerd isn't he? :rotfl:"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Horrid Henry doesn't usually get away with being horrid.;)0

There is nothing wrong with nerds, or geeks. I'm not sure what I've ended up with, but they're still lovely.:rotfl: I have visions of me queuing up with him at the lead figure shop.......I do love him, but he is going to be a nerd isn't he? :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

OH has no lead figures of anything, and didn't before his first girlfriend either :rotfl:
Actually, he does have a lead dragon, but that was a present from a 10 year old niece who thought her uncle would really like it as he likes LOTR-you've now reminded me to get that down for ebay. Thanks!Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Well I really didn't want my daughter reading them at 5/6, so put off buying them for as long as I could!
But I have since completely changed my tune with my youngest. I think they made her realise that reading could be enjoyable. Yay! She finds most of her school reading books (especially ORT) thoroughly boring. There were a couple of series that she did enjoy at school, especially the Monster stories which are quite Dahl-esque in their illustrations. But she reads far more of her own books - currently the Spiderwick Cronicles.
I would say it all depends on whether your son understands the humour. My daughter just thinks Henry is hilarious. She knows his behaviour is not 'real' and thus appropriate to copy (the negative influence was always my worry). She would love him in real life too!0
