I have a document I created in 2006 on my old computer, but when I try to open it, it requires a password which I have forgotten after all this time

If it is a Word document, try opening it in Wordpad or Notepad where you may be able to get the text.0

The symbols are due to the formatting in Word ( paragraphs, headers, spacings, etc ).
You should be able to scroll through all the rubbish and find the pure text ( but if it is a large document then this can prove tedious. ). You can then cut and paste the text into a new document and manually reapply any formatting to it.“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. If the document was password protected, then the content itself will normally have been encrypted. That will mean that it will appear as apparently random symbols/characters no matter what you view the file in or how much searching through it you do.
If the file contents is encrypted, then you will need the password.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Frugalmacdugal - Thanks but the only free software is for XLS.docs here.
I downloaded the software for the word cracker and on the original web page it stated the cost would be $9.99 but when it loaded and then went to the payment web page it was showing $19.99!! :eek:Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. :A0 -
If you PM me, and send me the file, I can 'probably' encrypt it.
Or you can buy some software to do it.0 -
What kind of document is it (you haven't said). Is it a Word document, an Excel document, Publisher document, etc.?0

If the file you want opened is in any office format - I should be able to get it open for you.
Send me a pm if you'd like me to try.0 -
