My biggest saving last winter was from home made exterior 50 mm polystyrene shutters, pressed into the window reveal every day at sundown. Not heavy and not for everyone.
But at £40 a year saving on a £20 capital cost think it's woith it. Invented or developed by Shurcliffe.

Hi googled Shurcliffe but couldn't find anything...is there a web site?

    Hi

The SMF2s average electricity consumption for this month in the past was 15 kwh per day and we have used 8 kwh per day this month:j:j:j:j

    So nearly half:T

We have been away for 10 days (but last year we were away for 3 weeks). While we were away we left on 2 energy saving light bulbs ( to deter burglars), one fridge and our land phones- this used about 1.5 kwh per day.

So a good month:D Next month is going to be harder as the kids are at home for the summer hols. I'm going to try and reduce my washing. (Thanks for the tips on not overloading my washing machine. I will check my manual to see what the exact loads are for the washing cycles I use.). I am not going to put our second fridge back on as I'm going to see if we can live without it.

Thanks for all the tips:D I'll try and use some of them this month.

All the Best & Good Luck

    SMF2

ps - I don't presently know how we are doing re the gas as I will have to wait for BG to read the meter....it's possible we have a meter key somewhere but I don't know where we've put it.

    Hi leccie watchers :)

I'm really grateful for the info about the i-measure site, I just need to remember to log in my details every week. I did the final meter reading for July and we averaged 11.13 per day (for 3 of us) in July, so I'm aiming to get this below 10 for August, if only to save towards the winter bills. After rent, electricity is our biggest expense regardless of how frugally we live, so any savings that can be made here are well worth it.

I like the sound of the thermal shutters, but can't imagine doing that where we live. :o (I'm now considering how this could be done from the inside on some of the windows.)
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

    Hi

Well Mr SMF2 has been working on the car for hours:rotfl:. This is what happened:-

    1) It did go (it has been idle for 2-3 weeks) so the solar panel seemed to have an effect.
    2) He disabled a tracking device that was put on the car by Norwich Union for Pay-As-You-Go insurance (they have since scrapped this service) - N U were never clear about what effect this device had on the battery.
    3) There is no light in the glove department.
    4) After testing the various different circuits the drain on the battery is currently down to the immobilser (approx 40%) and the remote locking mechanism (60%).
    5) When the sun is shining the solar panel creates more energy than is drained by the immobiliser and locking system:j but when it goes cloudy the energy created falls dramatically. However, we seem to drive the car more in the winter so this may not be an issue.

So fingers crossed that maybe taking of the NU tracking device might help:D....

    .....

    Cars - don't you just hate them:o

    Thanks All

    Congratulations :A

    Here's a spare key for you...8312.gif
You can buy them online, and I'm sure you can get them in hardware shops (they're less than £1, so not worth paying P&P for!)

    THANKS

    Hi:hello:,

Found the key and read the meter and our average use for this qtr in the past is 9.5 Kwh per day and we are currently averaging 6 Kwh per day - so another reduction of a THIRD:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j

I'm happy about this. This has been achieved by just putting the hot water on once instead of twice a day.

    Result

    SMF2:D

Ps - so now how can I reduce this even further?
  • Setmefree

Sounds like the hot water might be getting it for a day or two.

Also switching every second shower for a wash will help. I'm still trying to master the three minute shower.

Also washing in cold water is a lot more refreshing in summer. As is washing your hair in cold water.

Washing dishes in cold water [and detergent] helps too.

SMF2 - you are such an inspiration! Well done on your fabulous achievement. We're still struggling around the 100units for a week, I just can't seem to get it down further without investment, such as a tankless heater......
