Outstanding balance

Hi,
Up until about 7/8 months ago I had a mobile contract with 3. The bills were paid by direct debit without any issues. I moved to O2 and also ported my number which obviously allows 3 to claim any outstanding balance as they hold my PAC code.
I was contacted by them recently stating I owe them £50 and my wife owes them £40 as outstanding balances. I contacted them and they informed me that there was a computer error and they had not actually claimed these outstanding balances.
They have said that if I don't pay they will pass the debt onto a collection agency in which case we could end up paying additional charges.
We are in the process of remortgaging and we don't want a blemished record.
Are 3 allowed to do this? Is there no protection of an expiry date (similar to a cheque having a life span of 6 months (or is that a myth?))?
Cheers
Nigel

if you still owe the money - the debt doesnt disappear unfortunately!
A cheque may only last for 6 months - but if the person doesnt cash it - you still owe them
The onus is on you to ensure you have cleared your balance0
