depending on the distance from the top of the window to the ceeling, you could either batton or directly attach it to the ceeling.

i've done mine that way, via a batton and it does not look unusual
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

is it a council house by any chance?

of all the houses i have lived in, the post war council built ones all have lintels that are impossible to drill, no matter what type of bit you use. the only option, is as suggested above, fix a batten to the wall, that you can screw in just past the ends of the lintel, with a bit of no-nails running the length. means your curtains draw back quite a bit, and have to be quite wide, but its the only option

    I must get a life:D

Best thread running at this time

If , the OP has got /used a normal drill plus a SDS willing to think they are fairly cluede up on DIY?
So a burning smell will tell you its wood! Screeching noise its metal ?
A new drill bit , masonary /HSS etc would have already been tried

So IMHO ( really cant stand that expression, its so false!)
we need to think of attaching the pole/track WITHOUT drilling into that
    Lintel
  • I had occasion to drill into a lintel yesterday to hang a venetian blind.Only had an 18v combi with me and even with a brand new drill it wouldn't touch it.Took my SDS drill today and it went in like a knife through butter.I am yet to come across a lintel that an SDS drill won't work on,unless you hit the reinforcing steel. Now that is hard stuff.

Well, I am a real fan of liquid no-nails in this situation.

I can't even begin to try and remember how many times we have 'glued' battens above a window to take a curtain pole or track, and to date, we have not had one come down, even in the students houses that we rent out where swinging on the curtains seems to be a fave saturday night pastime.

Save your drill bits and your temper and get sticking mate...if you do it right, i.e. wallpaper over the battens or paint them out in the wall colour, they become invisible. My OH always sands the edges off to round them...looks much nicer. Use plenty of no-nails too...don't be shy with it.

Needless to say, don't stick the batten(s) to wallpaper..make sure it goes onto bare plaster preferably.

thanks for all your suggestions going to have another go this weekend (can't wait!!!) no wonder there were so many holes i had to fill in from previous owners attempt when i took their ugly wooden batten down (at least now i know why it was there).

it is definetely a steel lintel not wooden.
will try all the suggestions at some point no doubt.

got all the other rooms to do once ive mastered this one.

A friend of mine did the same. The batten stuck solidly to the plaster. Unfortunately - after a bit of use - the plaster fell off the wall!! :rotfl:
  • well ended up getting two screws in a wooden batten and used gunnable on that.

so far curtains etc still up but not holding out much hope for it staying there too long.

    thanks for all your suggestions.

just got rest of house to do now!!!!!!
