I go for quality over quantity for my DS's clothes. Most are bought from Boden - either in the sale or if a good money off discount comes along (not forgetting Quidco). Their clothes fit well, wash and iron like a dream and are really comfy. PLUS they sell on Ebay for nearly as much as I pay for them. His wardrobe is almost self funding with just a top up of a few items each season. The only thing he doesn't have loads of is PJ's as they are ridiculously expensive on the Island. I need an away trip to Asda or Tesco.

Could they survive with say 3 pairs of pjs,3 pairs of jeans,5 t-shirts etc?How many pants?

Mine survive on this amount of clothing;)

The boys have 2 pairs of pjs each and dd has 3 (she's a bedwetter).

They have about 10 pairs of pants each -had to buy 3 extra pairs for ds1 last weekend as they were off camping for a week and he didn't have enough.

School uniform -2 jumpers/cardis, 2 pairs of trousers for boys, dd has 2 dresses, 2 pinafores and a pair of trousers, 3 shirts/polo shirts.

Shoes -each child has school shoes, trainers and crocs/sandals/flipflops (1 of those 3). Wellies too of course.

Dd has more clothes than her brothers because there are more options for girls.

    1 coat each, 1 fleecey top/jacket and a mac.

Eldest has started saving for his own clothes now.
  • Twin DD’s are 7, they each have -

3 sets of nightwear, 1 pair of jeans, 2 combat/fashion trousers, 2 shorts, 2 skirts, 5 vests, 5 t-shirts, 3 long sleeved tops, 2 jumpers, 1 cardigan, one “party” outfit, one swimsuit, 10 pants, 10 socks, a play coat (last years school coat), a waterproof jacket and a pair of jogging bottoms for walking the dog.

For school, 1 P.E set, 5 blouses, 1 skirt, 1 pinafore and 2 cardigans. 5 pairs of school socks and a coat.

Footwear – School shoes, pumps, sandals & wellies

Used to have a LOT more but I found they were growing out of it before they had worn them much, I’m whittling it down all the time but Granny’s keep buying them stuff!!

I get given nearly all the stuff for the 2 boys from other people - so we end up with masses. The only thing I buy is school uniform - 3 prs trousers each and 6 shirts each (shld be 5 but they come in 3 packs). Ds1 has 1 blazer (at £75 it is only one!) - ds2 has 4 sweatshirts - but they have been handed down from ds1.

I have threatened a cull of clothes this week as they have both grown a lot recently and quite a lot of trousers are half mast.

I'm sure we should be able to get away with less - and I'm sure the linen baskets would be less full.

My kids would never wear PJ's once they were seven or so. They wore old T shirts and pants/knickers to bed, still their current size but the slogan/logo/picture wasn't cool enough for everyday wear any more. Since my youngest (16) has had his own clothing allowance for the past couple of years it's amazing how little he can get by on and how many real bargains he finds. I'm impressed. Just wish I had thought of it years ago. He doesn't buy anything that might run in the wash either, because he would have to wash it himself :p

I don't count clothes but it has to fit into the small space available.
The eldest has her own wardrobe with drawers at the bottom. If it doesn't fit in the wardrobe its slung out. The middle two each have a small underwear drawer, small PJ drawer, a tops drawer and a bottoms (mixed with dresses) draw, plus they share a jumper drawer. The baby has a few small drawers in my wardrobe - but with another on the way it will be all change - I will have to clear out one of my drawers under the bed for baby to use! The only exception is school uniform that for littlies is kept in my room.

We also have a like for like rule - one new in, so one old out. Sounds really harsh, but 2 adults, 4 kids and baby on way in a 2-bed house means you learn to be lean! They have enough, are smart and get what ever they need (not want) - it works for us.

And to add in a PS - I don't buy stuff that will need ironing......

Our kids have far too much but 90% was passed down or given to us so i dont feel i can complain too much. It would be easier and tidier if they had less though.

  • My son aged 6 has enough to clothe a small african nation !!!! When I last had a clear out of his sock drawer I counted 127 pairs ! Keep telling myself he does not need anything and still end up buying more. Not good for money saving.
  • My eldest has very few at the moment, but the other two are doing very well on hand-me-downs. Thank goodness they were all boys!!

I did have to buy the little 'un a couple of new babygros, as I tended to cut the feet off them when they got too small and toes started to poke thru'. I bought them at a car boot sale, they were brand new from Next, 50p for the two, the women I bought them off said if she has anymore boys she'll buy more new stuff! Her loss was my gain.
