Do I need to buy software to view Excel? I have chance of some work but it relies on me being able to view info, I've been told I need the full version. If I need to get it, where's the (cheapest!) best place?
Thanks
Thanks

You can actually download the free Excel viewer from Microsoft here.
If you also want to make your own excel files I believe the free Open Office can read/write to MS Office too! Open Office0 -
Thanks, I thought there was a viewer and I've got OpenOffice so I hope it's enough to get the work!0

open office calc views excel spreadsheets no problem, if you change the optionwhen your saving, you can even save as .xls. (open office writer can also read/save to word docs)
Their are a few subtle differences when you use open office calc to do formulas but their not major.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. I tried using Open Office but can't get it to work. Someone sent me some pages as an example of what would be sent for work but it loaded the page so I saw it, then immediately closed down saying that it is password protected. Is there a setting I need to use to get round this? Is it something in the material sent to me or something I can do? Thanks0

It shouldn't have closed down immediately, never seen that happen.
Usually if its an excel spreadsheet open office used to strip off the password protection so that you coudl get access, but that may have changed in the latest version.
Try opening it again and see if you can go to TOOLS>PROTECT DOCUMENT and see if you can turn off the protection from their.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. Sorry, real techie baby here, same question and answer but I need idiot speak.
This is part of and email I received:
"All of our work and guidance notes are in Microsoft Excel format, so you need to have the full version of this on your PC. Please can you confirm you have this software on your PC. Without this, you would not be able to open, edit and return our questionnaires. "
Would Excel viewer do this? I have it, dont know how to use it really, will pick it up quickly I imagine, any help greatly appreciated.0 -
Excel viwer gives read only access, if you need to edit/ammend/write anything its no good.
If you haven't got excel try. open office its 99.99% compatible. I can reccomend it.
