Credit checks

I know there is no definate way to tell how banks etc give you a credit rating, but are there any basic rules I should be following? The reason I'm asking is I am looking into doing a balance transfer but as Ive done this on a couple of occasions now I have around 5 credit cards (most of which I dont use anymore!) and want to know whether this would affect my credit check?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
